Here is the diaspora's least-told story. In the UN's 2020 emigrant data, Mozambique ranks among the top destination countries for Seychellois, alongside the UK, Australia, South Africa and Canada. Almost nobody writes about this community, which is exactly why this page exists.
The Indian Ocean neighbourhood
Mozambique's long coast faces the same ocean as Seychelles, and the two countries share centuries of Indian Ocean movement, trade and family lines. Modern movement includes work in fisheries, tourism, port trades and business between Maputo and Victoria, part of the wider East African corridor that has carried Seychellois for generations.
The East Africa connection
Seselwa presence on the African mainland is old. Communities lived in Kenya, Tanganyika, Zanzibar and Mozambique through the colonial era, and while many were compelled to move on when independence reshaped the region, the coastal ties never fully cut.
Official presence
Consular coverage for Mozambique runs through the Seychelles High Commission in Pretoria. If you are Seselwa in Maputo or anywhere on the coast, you are the community we know least about, and the registry needs you most. Put your city on the globe.
