South Africa is one of the five main destination countries for Seychellois emigrants, per the UN's 2020 migration data, and the nearest major hub to home. Four to five hours of flying connects Mahé to Johannesburg, which makes this the corridor where diaspora life and island life blur the most.
The community
Seselwa South Africans cluster in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with a long history of movement both ways for study, medical care, business and retail. Many Seychellois have family on both sides of this corridor, and many South African goods fill Victoria's shelves. It is the diaspora's most practical relationship.
Official presence
The Seychelles High Commission in Pretoria is the mission for southern Africa, covering the community in South Africa and neighbouring countries including Mozambique. See the consulates guide for details.
Weekend-close diaspora
Because home is close, this community flies back for Assumption Day on La Digue, for Festival Kreol, for weddings and funerals, in a way London and Perth cannot. If you are in Cape Town or Joburg and want the community mapped, register. This corridor deserves better than scattered WhatsApp groups.
