Seychellois in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom holds the largest Seychellois community outside Seychelles, and the oldest. The two countries were bound together long before the diaspora existed. Seychelles was a British colony until 1976, English is one of the three national languages, and London was where islanders went first, for school, for work, for a different life.

How the community formed

The first wave was students. Young Seychellois sent to study in Britain formed the very first Seychelles Student Association, the earliest organised Seselwa body abroad. The second wave came through economics. In the 1960s, with jobs scarce at home, Seychellois migrated to Britain under a special colonial work quota agreement. Many built their lives in catering, in hotels, and in hospitals across London and the south of England.

The third wave was political. After 5 June 1977, the coup that changed Seychelles, families who opposed the new order left in numbers. Many settled in Britain, and the community took on the character it still has, part economic, part exile, all Seselwa.

Community life

The UK Seychelles Community Association (UKSCA) became the anchor organisation, a registered charity supported by several London councils and the first Seychelles NGO in Europe to build a working network with London's other ethnic and exile communities. Community life today runs through family networks, church, and social media groups more than any single institution, which is exactly the gap this registry exists to close.

Official presence

The Seychelles High Commission in London is the country's senior mission in Europe and the consular point of contact for the UK community. For passports, civil status documents and emergencies, start there, and see our consulates guide.
