The first openly published, documented dataset of the Seychellois diaspora. Download it, check it, cite it, build on it. Free under CC BY 4.0.

ANSER · THE SHORT VERSION

This is the Seychellois Diaspora Atlas dataset: Seychelles-born emigrant stock by destination country and year, 1990 to 2024, taken from the UN DESA 2024 revision and reconciled against destination censuses. It is free to download and reuse under CC BY 4.0. Read the data-quality note before citing the destination breakdown.

KEY FACTS · EACH ONE SOURCED
  • 22,191 Seychelles-born people living abroad in 2024 (UN DESA) [UNDESA]
  • 168 data rows, long format, CSV and JSON [UNDESA]
  • 80% of the UN total sits in Mozambique, a probable artifact; the UK, Canada and France are absent [UNDESA]

The counted emigrant stock rose from about 10,500 in 1990 to 22,200 in 2024. Read the next chart before trusting the destinations, because most of this total sits in a single questionable figure.

Read this before you cite the destinations. The UN DESA 2024 bilateral series places 17,655 of 22,191 Seychelles-born emigrants (80%) in Mozambique, and records zero in the United Kingdom, Canada, France and the United States. No Seychellois community of that size is known in Mozambique, and the missing countries are the diaspora's best-documented hubs, so we treat the Mozambique figure as a statistical artifact and lead with destination censuses for the hubs.
Where the UN places Seychelles-born emigrants, 2024
Mozambique 17,655 Australia 2,623 Italy 777 South Africa 460 United Republic of Tanzania 360 Mauritius 125 Namibia 60 Sri Lanka 24 Greece 24

Mozambique alone holds 80% of the UN total, while the United Kingdom, Canada and France, the diaspora's known hubs, do not appear at all. That pattern is the reason this Atlas leads with destination censuses, not the UN bilateral figures.

Women have been the majority of Seychellois abroad for three decades, 54.8% in 2024. It is one of the few points where the UN data and the secondary literature agree.
